Adjusting to Dentures: 4 Helpful Steps

Adjusting to Dentures: 4 Helpful Steps

Over 40 million Americans have dentures. These removable false teeth can restore your smile and make it easier to bite and chew, but adjusting to them can prove to be a challenge. As a result, some patients feel hesitant to move forward. But there’s nothing to worry about! A few simple steps can help make the transition smoother and more comfortable.

At her practice in San Jose, California, skilled general dentist Irma Francisco, DDS, specializes in denture design and placement. Here, she provides 4 tips that can make it easier to adjust to your new smile.

Step 1: Give yourself time to adapt

Dentures are designed specifically for your mouth, but it’s normal to experience gum soreness, minor irritation, and extra saliva production during the first few weeks you wear them. If you find that your dentures bother you, remove them and take a break. Start by wearing them for a few hours each day, and gradually increase the time to help your mouth adjust comfortably.

Step 2: Practice speaking and eating

Many denture wearers say that eating and speaking feel somewhat awkward, especially at first. Don’t beat yourself up if things seem, well … off. We recommend starting with soft foods or cutting tougher items like chicken into small bites. If you’re worried about slurring or unclear speech, reading out loud can help you confidently articulate.

Step 3: Maintain good oral hygiene

Dentures are just like your natural teeth in that they need daily cleaning and maintenance. If you don’t regularly soak them in solution, they can begin to smell and cause bad breath. Not cleaning your dentures can also cause bacteria to build up, increasing the risk of gum irritation.

We recommend a nightly routine that involves removing your dentures, brushing your gums, scraping your tongue, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash.

Step 4: Communicate with your dentist

Sometimes dentures need to be readjusted to ensure a more comfortable fit. Tell Dr. Francisco if you notice sore spots or persistent pain. She regularly works with denture patients and has the knowledge and expertise to support you throughout this transitional period.

We can determine if dentures are right for you
